The stomach is an organ between the esophagus and the small intestine. It mixes food with stomach acid and helps digest protein. Stomach cancer mostly affects older people -- two-thirds of people who have it are over age 65.
 
Causes and Risk Factors
 
Your risk of getting stomach cancer is higher if you:
1. Have had a Helicobacter pylori infection
2. Have had stomach inflammation
3. Are a male
4. Eat lots of salted, smoked, or pickled foods
5. Smoke cigarettes
6. Have a family history of stomach cancer
 
Signs and Symptoms
 
It is hard to diagnose stomach cancer in its early stages. Some common symptoms include:
1. Indigestion
2. Stomach discomfort
3. In advanced cases, blood in the stool
4. Vomiting
5. Unexplained weight loss
6. Jaundice
7. Trouble swallowing
 
Investigations
 
1. Your doctor may examine you physically.
2. You may also be recommended to get tests done which include:
a) Blood and imaging tests
b) Endoscopy
c) Biopsy
 
Treatment
 
Stomach cancer may be diagnosed late; it can be hard to treat as well. Treatment includes:
1. Surgery
2. Chemotherapy
3. Radiation
4. Combination therapy
