Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is an antibiotic used for the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis (TB) and inactive (latent) TB (a serious infection caused by bacteria that affects the lungs and in certain cases other parts of the body). It works by killing the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

In Tuberculosis (TB)

Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is used to treat tuberculosis, an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs but can affect other parts of the body as well. It kills and stops the growth of infection causing bacteria and helps in treating the infection. Take it in the dose and duration advised by the doctor. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor as doing so may cause the infection to return or worsen. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to get maximum benefit.

Side effects of Isoniazid Tablet

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Isoniazid

  • Peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of feet and hand)
  • Hepatitis (viral infection of liver)
  • Skin rash
  • Lethargy
  • Increased liver enzymes

How to use Isoniazid Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is to be taken empty stomach.
Avoid Isoniazid 300mg Tablet with tyramine-rich food such as cheese, smoked fish, meats and some types of beer.

Consuming alcohol while taking Isoniazid 300mg Tablet may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heart beat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure (Disulfiram reaction).
Pregnancy

Isoniazid 300mg Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
Breast feeding
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.
Driving
UNSAFE
Isoniazid 300mg Tablet may cause side effects which could affect your ability to drive.
Isoniazid 300mg Tablet can cause fits, mental health problems and optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve that may cause loss of vision.) This may affect your driving ability.
Kidney
SAFE IF PRESCRIBED
Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is recommended.
However, talk to your doctor if you have any underlying kidney disease.
Liver
CAUTION
Isoniazid 300mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Isoniazid 300mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Isoniazid 300mg Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

Q. Can I take isoniazid with ibuprofen/Benadryl/Nyquil/Aleve/Mucinex/amoxicillin?

There no known serious drug interactions of isoniazid with ibuprofen, paracetamol (trade name: Tylenol), naproxen (trade name: Aleve), amoxicillin or any active drug present in Nyquil or Mucinex. Please inform your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking to avoid interactions that may reduce effectiveness of any treatment or aggravate side effects

Q. Does Isoniazid 300mg Tablet cause weight loss/weight gain/hair loss/diarrhea/affect menstruation?

Changes in body weight (gain/loss), hair loss, diarrhea or changes in menstruation are not among the known side effects of Isoniazid 300mg Tablet. You may experience few of these side effects while on multi drug (including Isoniazid 300mg Tablet) treatment for tuberculosis

Q. Does Isoniazid 300mg Tablet cause acne/make you tired/cause constipation?

You may experience unusual tiredness, constipation or acne while on treatment with Isoniazid 300mg Tablet. Please inform your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking to avoid interactions that may reduce effectiveness of any treatment or aggravate side effects

Q. Does Isoniazid 300mg Tablet affect birth control?

Isoniazid 300mg Tablet has no known interaction with commonly used oral contraceptives (birth control pills). However, multidrug treatment for tuberculosis contains active drug rifampin that decreases the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and hampers birth control.
