Description
Migraine is a benign and recurring syndrome of headache associated with other symptoms of neurologic dysfunction which includes sensitivity to light, sound, or movement. It is the second most common cause of headache, afflicting approximately 15% of women and 6% of men.
Causes and Risk Factors
Common migraine triggers include:
1. Glare from bright lights
2. Loud sound or other afferent stimulation
3. Hunger
4. Excess stress
5. Physical exertion
6. Stormy weather or barometric pressure changes
7. Hormonal fluctuations during menses
8. Lack of or excess sleep
9. Excess of alcohol
Signs and Symptoms
1. Patient may experience any of the following:
a) Unilateral headache - Moderate or severe intensity
b) Throbbing pain aggravated by movement
2. Patient may also experience one of the following:
a) Nausea and vomiting
b) Photophobia and phonophobia
Investigations
1. Your doctor will check for relevant symptoms.
2. Blood tests to check for infections in the blood vessels
3. MRI Scan
4. CT Scan
5. Spinal tap (lumbar puncture)
6. The Migraine Disability Assessment Score (MIDAS) is a well-validated, easy-to-use tool which can be applied once a diagnosis of migraine has been established, it is important to assess the extent of a patient's disease and disability.
Treatment
1. General modifications include:
a) Practice a regulated lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, and regular sleep
b) Avoid excess of caffeine and alcohol
c) Avoid too much stress
d) Avoid specific headache triggers
2. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, transcendental meditation, hypnosis, and conditioning techniques such as biofeedback to counter stress
3. Over-the-counter medication like pain killers and prescription medicines may also be recommended
