What is Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgG?

Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) is the main cause of genital herpes which is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV-2 infection is lifelong and incurable. Genital herpes infection is mostly asymptomatic but symptoms such as genital blisters, body aches & fever do occur in some patients. Antibodies are produced by immune system to fight with the virus.This test detects IgG antibodies that are detectable from 21 to over 41 days of infection. IgG antibody is not used to detect early infection rather it is used to detect whether the patient has been previously exposed to the virus. The test is highly recommended in pregnant females to recognize HSV risk. This will help to prevent or minimize congential deformity in the fetus

What is Herpes Simplex Virus 2 IgG used for?

If you have signs of herpes virus infection like blister on the genitals
When you have encephalitis and the doctor is suspecting a viral cause
If you are pregnant, and are suffering from herpes
If you are being screened for a previous exposure to herpes simplex virus
If you have any other sexually transmitted disease and are at increased risk of herpes infection

Interpretations

The presence of HSV 2 IgG antibodies usually indicates previous infection
A significant increase in HSV IgG antibodies, measured by comparing acute and convalescent samples usually indicate ans active or recent infection
Negative HSV antibody test usually means that it is unlikely that the person has been exposed to HSV
